Celebrations turned into a tragedy in northern France overnight after a 17-year-old girl died after falling from the back of a lorry.

The incident occurred shortly after 12:30 am as a jubilant crowd soaked up the French national team’s victory over Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals.

The teenager fell from the truck as it entered a roundabout and was crushed.

Emergency responders tried to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six minors were present when the accident happened. One of them was taken to Maubeuge hospital in a state of shock.

The truck driver was taken into police custody, and an investigation has been launched.
