Mount Semeru shook East Java again on Wednesday as new eruptions sent hot ash and fast moving clouds down its slopes. The main flows travelled up to seven kilometres, and a column of ash rose two kilometres into the sky, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The alert level was raised to its highest point after several blasts through the afternoon.

More than 300 people from the most exposed villages in Lumajang were moved to shelters as thick smoke settled over the area.

No casualties have been reported, but memories of the 2021 eruption, which killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes, still weigh heavily on residents.

Officials say activity has eased since dawn, yet the volcano remains under close watch and people are urged to stay clear of restricted zones while monitoring continues.
