It was the scene of the spectacular theft of the Crown Jewels. The Apollo Gallery at the Louvre Museum has reopened to the public, returning to its original role as a 17th-century state gallery, with no display cases and no jewels.

The jewels that were not stolen in the heist will soon be displayed in another room, which will be designed as a windowless strongroom, said the museum’s director, Christophe Leribault.

In October 2025, a four-man commando unit broke into the Apollo Gallery using a lorry-mounted lifting platform and, in broad daylight, made off with eight French Crown Jewels.

The robbery exposed serious security flaws at the world’s most-visited museum and led to the departure of its then president, Laurence des Cars.

The haul from the heist, estimated at 88 million euros, has still not been found.
