After the United States Embassy in Albania warned that Iran-linked groups could target Americans and US-affiliated entities in the Western Balkan country, authorities in Tirana stated that security institutions are on high alert, with all mechanisms “active and functional”.

In a statement issued Thursday, Albanian President Bajram Begaj’s office said he was in daily contact with the National Security Council and is being continuously briefed on all potential threats.

Albania’s National Security Council brings together top state officials to assess risks and recommend measures, but does not take binding decisions.

“The president is informed about every situation and scenario, as well as all measures taken under security protocols,” the presidency said in a statement, adding that coordination with international partners remains at “extremely high levels”.

The response follows a warning from the US embassy that Tehran-backed groups may target not only US-related entities but also members of the Iranian opposition based in Albania.

The embassy cautioned that public spaces — including tourist areas, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and clubs — could be at risk, urging vigilance and reporting of suspicious activity.

At the same time, developments in Bulgaria point to broader regional tensions.

Authorities in Sofia have confirmed that Iran sent a diplomatic note last month warning the NATO member against allowing US military aircraft to use its airports for operations targeting Iran. The warning came after reports of US military planes being spotted in the capital.

Speaking to NOVA television, former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynski described the message as routine but significant.

“This is normal diplomatic practice in times of crisis. It is not a threat, but a warning,” she said, emphasising that Bulgaria has assured Tehran it is not involved in any military activity, with no combat flights over its airspace or refuelling on its territory.

Neynski added that the note was not made public earlier to avoid sparking public concern, particularly during an ongoing election campaign where national security issues are highly sensitive.
