A large sinkhole has opened outside a Malibu beachfront mansion reportedly owned by Oscar-winning US actor Nicolas Cage.
The hole emerged early on Tuesday morning, swallowing up part of the house’s driveway and triggering a gas leak.
Gas supplies were temporarily cut along a 26-metre section of the street because of concerns about coastal erosion. Authorities also barred entry to five homes in the luxurious neighbourhood.
The private street lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway.
No-one was reportedly hurt.
The incident followed heavy rain and powerful waves along the Southern California coast over the holiday weekend. The weather was linked to the remnants of Tropical Storm Marie, which had earlier been a hurricane.
Marie did not make landfall but brought dangerous surf and coastal flooding to the area.
Property records show the mansion was sold in 2024. The previous owner told The New York Times at the time that Cage was the buyer.
