Setting off on your first solo trip can be daunting, but there are definitely ways to make it less so.

While no destination can be 100% safe (the same goes for the city you live in), you can certainly minimise risk by opting to visit a place known for things like being able to walk around at night, or being stable in terms of wars and conflicts.

To help you narrow down your search, Squaremouth has compared more than 100 countries to identify the safest countries to visit.

The US travel insurance comparison site evaluated destinations which have “very high” or “high” human development according to the Human Development Index, and looked at elements including a destination’s Global Peace Index score, the perception of safety based on Numbeo data, the median mobile internet download speed, and access to medical care.

Europe dominated the findings, with seven of the top 10 safest destinations for solo travellers found on the continent.

The safest solo travel destinations around the world

Microstate San Marino came out on top of the ranking, with a risk index of 0.78 out of 10.

Locals have a high perception of personal safety – with 90% polled saying they are comfortable walking alone at night – and the country also benefits from a good healthcare system as well as love environmental risks.

Another European microstate came out second, Andorra, with a risk score of 1.33 out of 10.

Third place won’t surprise anyone who has visited: Singapore, which has a score of 1.56 out of 10.

The top five was rounded out by two countries on the continent, Austria and Czechia. Estonia, Denmark and Slovenia all made the top 10.
