Bonnie Tyler has been hospitalised at Faro hospital after undergoing emergency surgery for a perforated intestine.

The Welsh singer, 74, who has lived in the Algarve, Portugal, for several years, had been in hospital since 30 March following complications after the surgery.

Local source Correio da Manhã says that her condition had been stable, but apparently worsened today.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that Bonnie was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she lives, for emergency bowel surgery. The operation went well and she is now recovering. We know that all her family, friends and fans will be worried by this news and will wish her a full and speedy recovery,” read a message posted on the artist’s Instagram account.

Reportedly, Tyler is unconscious and on a ventilator to help her breathe. None of the singer’s relatives has yet commented on the situation.

Bonnie Tyler is the stage name of Gaynor Hopkins, who was born in social housing in Neath, Wales. Her first single came out in 1977, but she only became known worldwide five years later with ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. After its release, the song spent two weeks at number one in the UK charts and four weeks at the top in the United States.

The artist went on to be nominated for a Grammy and represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013.

Tyler has concerts scheduled for May in Malta and Germany, and a tour that was due to take place in the UK, Austria, Hungary, Turkey and Romania.
