Dan said he wants parties to negotiate a workable coalition before he formally names a candidate. He also opened the door to a technocratic government — led by non-partisan experts rather than active party politicians — calling it “a scenario that has a chance.”

The president added that he already had technocrat candidates in mind, though he didn’t put forward any names.

Romania’s government collapsed last Tuesday after Bolojan lost a parliamentary confidence vote only 10 months into office, plunging one of NATO’s key eastern flank states into renewed political uncertainty amid growing economic pressure.

Dan plans to convene formal consultations with political parties later this week or early next week, including with the far-right AUR party led by George Simion, whom he defeated in a presidential election last year. “I will summon all parties, as required by the constitution,” Dan said.
