The Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the European Commission have announced the winners for the 2026 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Awards, also known as the EUmies.

The Awards, founded in 1988 in Barcelona, spotlight the excellence in built works of architecture in Europe and diploma works by freshly graduated architects.

This year’s winning projects were chosen from 410 nominated works and reveal how architecture can champion the cause of sustainable and conscious development.

EUmies Awards Architecture 2026 was awarded to Charleroi Exhibition Palace by AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck, based out of Belgium. The project features an intelligent renovation of a 1950s convention centre in Charleroi, Belgium.

Focusing on reimagining an existing building, the renovation featured changes such as a central hall transformed into covered urban terraces and black ground replaced by a green park through demineralisation. The EUmies Awards called it “an architecture that values repair and reuse as project tools” in an announcement of the winners.

The EUmies Awards Emerging Architecture 2026 was presented to Temporary Spaces for the Slovenian National Theatre Drama by Vidic Grohar Arhitekti. Architects transformed an abandoned industrial complex in Ljubljana, Slovenia, into a public, purposeful space.

“Their projects demonstrate how architecture can transform our living environments into sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring places,” said Glenn Micallef, the European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport.

The EUmies Awards Days will be held at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and the Victoria Eugenia Palace in Barcelona on the 11 and 12 May.

In addition to the Awards Ceremony, the program will feature events like talks with winners, finalists, and jury members and an exhibition displaying the 40 selected works.
