You may not recognise the name immediately, but his pop culture defining voice marked an entire generation’s childhood.

Peter Cullen, the prolific voice actor best known for giving his authoritative baritone to Autobot leader Optimus Prime in the 80s cartoon series Transformers, has died aged 85.

“His family asks that you honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle,'” said his family in a statement.

No cause of death was given.

Born in 1941 in Montreal, Cullen got his start working in radio in Canada. By the early 1980s he was in demand as a voice actor for animation and contributed to series like The Smurfs, Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends – in which he voiced Bruce Banner and the Hulk.

His voice could be heard in the decade’s most famous cartoons, including Voltron, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dungeons & Dragons, G.I. Joe and DuckTales.

His signature role came with Transformers, and he continued playing the part of Optimus Prime when the cartoon moved to the big screen with 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie, and then later in Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers film franchise launched in 2007. He voiced the role throughout the series until 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

When Cullen read about the heroic Autobot leader, he thought about his older brother, who had served as a US Marine in the Vietnam War.

“He was my hero, and he certainly was the mainstay behind the character,” Cullen shared. “I just did an impression of Larry, and he’s still alive in my mind today because every time I do Prime, there’s my brother Larry.”

Other highlights from Cullen’s prolific career include voicing the titular character in the 1987 Predator movie, as well as Eeyore across various Winnie-the-Pooh projects. These include Disney’s The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh TV series that aired from 1988-91, as well as films such as The Tigger Movie (2000), Piglet’s Big Movie (2003) and Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005).

In 2023, Cullen won the lifetime achievement award at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
