Nobu is continuing to expand its hospitality portfolio in Europe with plans to develop a new hotel, restaurant, villas and residences at the luxury Monte Rei resort in Portugal’s eastern Algarve region.

Scheduled to welcome guests in 2029, it will be the brand’s second destination in Portugal, following a yet-to-open hotel on the Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon.

Set within more than 1,000 acres of Algarve countryside, and centred around a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, the Nobu Hotel will feature 100 rooms and suites and a signature Nobu restaurant.

Developed in partnership with Norfin and designed by Rockwell Group alongside DSA Architects, construction is expected to begin on the Monte Rei project in 2027. Alongside the hotel and restaurant, it will also include 21,000 square meters of Nobu villas and branded residences.

“Monte Rei offers a rare combination of natural beauty, privacy and an established reputation for exceptional golf and residential living,” said Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality.

“Together with Norfin, we have the opportunity to create a distinctive Nobu destination that feels deeply connected to the Eastern Algarve while delivering the hospitality, dining, design and service for which the brand is known around the world.”

Nobu’s European hospitality plans

The Algarve development is the latest announcement by Nobu in Europe.

In terms of hotels, the brand already operates properties in destinations such as Barcelona, Ibiza, London, Marbella, Rome, San Sebastian and Warsaw. This September, Nobu will open in Madrid and is also planning future openings in Hamburg and Kraków.

Nobu also has plans to open its first UK countryside retreat in Rutland, England, as well as residences in Amsterdam and Montenegro.
