A carefree life on a dream island in Greece, just switching off and relaxing – that’s now possible on Syros, but only on one condition: you must love cats.

The animal welfare organisation “Syroscats (source in German)” is looking for volunteers aged 25 and over. “We welcome volunteers – individuals or couples – who are fit, mature, healthy and independent,” the organisation writes.

In return, what you have to offer is: love cats and look after the animals for at least one month, around five hours a day, five days a week.

In exchange, the animal welfare organisation apparently provides accommodation, breakfast and utilities.

“If you have training or experience as a veterinary assistant, or experience with feral cats, you are especially welcome, but we are happy to hear from all cat lovers, as long as you are willing to get your hands dirty, are reliable and able to work independently, and can turn up on time,” the organisation writes.

A dream island

The heart of the island is the town of Ermoupoli, which does not look like a traditional fishing village but rather like an elegant 19th-century port town. Broad squares, grand townhouses, marble staircases and an impressive town hall are reminders that Syros was once one of Greece’s most important commercial hubs.

Syros is one of the most fascinating islands in the Cyclades. The island is considered largely unspoilt. It is not a typical party destination like Mykonos. People in search of authenticity and peace and quiet can visit cafés and restaurants that are also frequented by locals – often at reasonable prices.

Anyone wanting to experience real everyday Greek life will find their own little paradise here.
