Hangbags at dawn: Rare double-signed Hermès Birkin to headline major luxury auction

A rare Hermès Birkin bag bearing two signatures from Jane Birkin is set to lead a high-profile luxury accessories sale by Heritage Auctions, with estimates placing it between $€185,000 to €275,000.

The Bleu Marine Courchevel leather bag is one of the standout lots in the auction house’s Spring Luxury Accessories sale, which features a curated selection of high-end handbags and accessories.

This Birkin is unusual not only for its condition and provenance, but for its dual inscription. The actor and singer signed the interior twice, including a personalised message to the original owner, “Midori Your Friend Jane,” alongside a second signature.

The fashion essential once belonged to Midori Senga, a longtime friend of Birkin.

Birkin, who died in 2023, inspired the original design of the bag in 1984 after a chance meeting with Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas. Over time, the Birkin became one of the most recognisable and expensive handbags in the world, with resale prices often exceeding retail.

The auction itself reflects the growing scale of the luxury resale market.

Alongside the Birkin, the sale includes a range of designer handbags from Hermès as well as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, with several lots estimated in the tens of thousands of euros.

The focus is on rarity, condition and origin, with signed or limited pieces positioned as headline attractions.

Founded in Dallas, Heritage Auctions is one of the largest auction houses in the world, known for handling fine art, collectibles and memorabilia.

In recent years, it has expanded aggressively into luxury accessories, building dedicated sales around designer handbags and positioning them as investment-grade assets rather than seasonal fashion items.

One of Birkin’s original bags sold for around €8 million (about $10 million) in an auction in Paris, setting a record for a handbag and underscoring the growing overlap between fashion, celebrity memorabilia and fine art collecting.

The bag will be sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ Spring Luxury Accessories sale in Dallas, with live and online bidding open to international buyers.

The auction is scheduled for Thursday 23 April, 2026.
