‘Journey to Ancient Greece’ has opened at the Liangzhou Museum in Zhejiang Province in southern China, one of the country’s most important archaeological museums.

Through more than 160 selected archaeological finds of great artistic and historical importance, visitors are introduced to decisive aspects of ancient Greek society: the birth of democracy, the development of theatre and philosophical thought, the Olympic Games, and the perception of aesthetics in art and everyday life.

Annually, the Liangzhou Museum receives hundreds of thousands of visitors, a fact that is expected to significantly enhance the show’s international impact.

This is the second stop of the exhibition’s tour of China, following its success at the Shanshindui Museum.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Greece to China, Dr. Eugenios Kalpyris, a delegation from the Greek Ministry of Culture led by Secretary General Georgios Didaskalos, as well as senior Chinese government and cultural officials.

During the ceremony, the Greek Ambassador underlined the special symbolism of the exhibition, describing it as a living channel of communication between two ancient civilizations. He also said it was a tool allowing deeper understanding of Greece’s cultural heritage, which is the foundation of both European and global civilization.

In reference to the historic signing 20-years ago of the Integrated Strategic Relationship between Greece and China, Dr Kalpyris added that this exhibition highlights the timelessness and sincerity of relations between the two peoples.

Journey to Ancient Greece will remain open until 31 July 2026.
