Thousands of people gathered on Sunday morning in the church of Gondomar, a municipality east of the Porto metropolitan area, for the funeral of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and brother André Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. The bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, presided over the funeral mass. The church was completely full and a few dozen people followed the ceremony through loudspeakers outside. The coffins were then transported to the cemetery next to the church. The urns of the two players were carried by friends and players from Gondomar FC, the club where Diogo…

Yet the bars of Manchester, as in Liverpool last week, were haunted by a sense of impending doom. Upstart Reform still has a runaway poll lead over the two main parties. A general election isn’t expected until 2029, yet many of Starmer and Badenoch’s own MPs believe each could face leadership challenges after May 2026 elections in Scotland, Wales and England that will provide a major test of the public mood. Polling by the Opinium market researcher, conducted last week, found Starmer’s approval rating had slipped backwards (to net minus 44 points, down 3 points in a week) after his…

EPP chief Manfred Weber, trying to bridge the divide within his party, described this week’s disagreements as “discussing the issues among friends.” But he didn’t shy away from explaining why von der Leyen’s proposals had upset sections of his own side. “We are a mayor’s party so we have the overwhelming part of our mayors and regional leaders in the EPP family ― and we are also a farmers’ party,” he said. “And in both aspects, we are not yet fully satisfied with the national reform program, where we concentrate decisions on the EU budget in the capitals.” To quell…

There has long been a debate within the European Union over how to name plant-based foods. These products are becoming increasingly popular, yet uncertainty remains about how they should be labelled and promoted within the single market.  Can we call a soya-based patty a veggie burger? Should we use the term “sausage” if it doesn’t contain meat, or do such terms confuse consumers?  On Wednesday, the European Parliament decided that names such as hamburger, sausage, escalope or steak can only be used for meat products and not for plant-based foods.  “I accept that steak, cutlet or sausage are products from…

A key argument put forward to convince Le Maire to join the government as defense minister was the fact that, thanks to his good relations with the German political class, he could help build a “Europe of defense” — an idea that remains just that, despite rising threats across the continent. A quick end However, on Sunday evening, a few minutes after Moulin announced the list of new ministers, which included Le Maire, the backlash began, startling the former finance minister. “You can see that I am only a pretext and that the problem is unfortunately infinitely deeper,” Le Maire…

Calling the EU “a steadfast friend … during challenging times we are going through right now,” Nielsen talked up the island’s vast reserves of rare earths and critical minerals, which he said have the potential to “shift global and security balances” and are ripe for investment. “Greenland is ready to move with the EU to hasten the pace,” he said, adding that the island was seeking investments from the European Investment Bank in projects “related to infrastructure and raw materials.” Nielsen, who wore a blue anorak while addressing MEPs, noted one area of disagreement was the EU’s trade ban on…

Russian forces sent instructions via Telegram to two teenagers from Lviv in western Ukraine, telling them to hide a bomb in a flower pot next to the entrance of a Ukrainian soldier’s home.  The two boys, aged 15 and 14, installed a smartphone with a camera enabled with remote access so handlers could detonate the bomb whenever they wanted. If their mission were successful, their contact would pay them, according to a statement from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).  The SBU said the boys were caught “red-handed” as they planted the bomb and face up to 12 years in prison.  Danielle…

The budget carrier released its online travel agency (OTA) survey this week, calling out firms such as eDreams, Tix, and Vola for inflating costs by up to 176 per cent for products such as reserving a seat or adding extra baggage.
