By Egle Markeviciute EU Tech Loop with Euronews Published on 22/08/2025 – 7:00 GMT+2 Central and Eastern Europe remain underserved by data centres, despite favourable conditions, a new mapping tool shows. Now, as the European Union prepares to invest €20 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactories, Poland and the Baltics are pushing to secure investment and strengthen the region’s digital sovereignty. The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Energy and AI Observatory recently published a report on data centre availability in Europe, covering both existing and planned facilities. The IEA’s interactive map highlights operating hubs with less than 500 megawatt (MW) capacity (in…
Ryanair has released a new sharp statement criticising the European Commission over the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, following a significant issue at Athens airport’s Eleftherios Venizelos. The budget airline has called for urgent reforms to the air traffic control (ATC) system, highlighting the delays its flights experienced on Wednesday to and from Athens. Specifically, Ryanair reported that, so far in 2025 (1 January – 20 August), more than 5,000 Ryanair flights and over 900,000 passengers have been unfairly delayed due to Greek ATC mismanagement and staff shortages, making Greece the 5th worst-performing ATC service for delays in Europe. Last week Manuel Trindade, 22, died after being fatally struck by a bull at Campo Pequeno in Lisbon. He was treated in the infirmary and then transported to São José hospital, where he died less than 24 hours later. The tragedy shook the entire country and the bullfighting community. Manuel died while trying to catch a bull head-on. The young man was part of the Grupo de Forcados Amadores de São Manços, one of Portugal’s oldest troupes. He advanced, one foot in front of the other, towards an animal weighing around 700 kg, already marked by splinters. Exclusive to Portuguese…
Two Commission officials, granted anonymity to speak about the sensitive process, said that alternative models were being considered whereby departments could be merged. By the end of 2026, the EU executive will move to eliminate “unnecessary processes” and encourage “more collaborative working,” having carried out a thorough assessment of “who does what.” An external high-level group will be convened this autumn to provide advice on the process, with the delivery of the review slated for the end of 2025 or start of 2026. POLITICO approached the Commission for clarification on the plans — although its Spokespersons’ Service routinely refuses to…
Published on 30/08/2025 – 7:00 GMT+2 •Updated 01/09/2025 – 10:05 GMT+2 Summer of 2025 has brought the worst wildfire season in decades for the EU. More than one million hectares have burned since January — with Spain and Portugal alone accounting for over two-thirds of the devastation. Yet the number of firefighters across Europe remains “woefully low”, European trade unions warn. Fresh data from Eurostat shows that in 2024, the EU had 390,600 professional firefighters, up nearly 8% compared to 2023. Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and Spain employ the largest forces, each with between 42,100 and 61,700 firefighters. By contrast,…

Wadephul said at a news conference on Wednesday that despite efforts by Europe and the United States, Russia hasn’t been willing to enter negotiations, a challenge New Delhi could potentially address. “The only demand is that weapons fall silent,” Wadephul said during his two-day visit to India, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown…

By Andreas Rogal & Tamsin Paternoster with EBU Published on 21/08/2025 – 20:04 GMT+2 French winemakers this year have been forced to bring forward the 2025 harvest earlier after high temperatures have caused grapes to ripen earlier than at the traditional wine harvesting season of September to October. Harvesters in France’s Château Carbonnieu have found that temperatures approaching 40C have caused strain to white wine grape clusters. Under hot conditions and a lack of water, berries have ripened ahead of schedule. “The harvest used to begin on September 15, you see, and today is August 19. This global warming phenomenon is now much more reminiscent…
