European Union countries are divided over the volume of polluting credits their industries could use on their path to hitting the 2040 climate neutrality target, split between those who want more flexibility and those pushing to maintain higher climate ambitions intact. The discussion held by European ambassadors crystalizes the growing tensions among the EU27 member states over the future of the Green Deal, once hailed as the bloc’s landmark policy and engine of clean growth. Nonetheless, as the EU puts the focus on competitiveness, the European industry has voiced concerns about excessive regulation and targets that are too strict, making…
Families of the scores of people killed in a deadly gang raid by Rio de Janeiro police have begun burying the dead, with residents left reeling by the scenes of carnage and angry at law enforcement whom they accuse of excessive force, torture and extrajudicial killings. At least 132 people were killed during Tuesday’s operation, including four policemen, according to a tally by Rio de Janeiro’s public defenders’ office. A day after a raid that many described as like a war, the low-income favela neighbourhood showed signs of a return of everyday activities, with a few restaurants and shops once…
By AP with Doloresz Katanich Published on 31/10/2025 – 12:22 GMT+1 Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán said he would try to persuade US President Donald Trump to grant Hungary an exemption from Washington’s new sanctions on Russian oil when they meet next week. The Trump administration unveiled sanctions last week against Russia’s major state-affiliated oil firms Rosneft and Lukoil, a move that could expose their foreign buyers — including those in India, China and Central Europe — to secondary sanctions. While most European Union member states sharply reduced or halted imports of Russian fossil fuels following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on…
All 25,000 international tourists who were in Jamaica when Hurricane Melissa made landfall on 28 October are accounted for and in good health, according to tourism minister Edmund Bartlett. Hundreds are still waiting for flights out of the country as airports were closed by what quickly became the strongest storm in the world this year, as well as the worst to hit Jamaica in decades. Europe’s largest holiday company TUI has cancelled all package holidays to Jamaica until 9 November. The hurricane has caused severe damage and flooding across the northern Caribbean, with the confirmed death toll standing at 49.…
Hours after the episode aired, acting NASA administrator Sean Duffy responded to Kardashian in a post including a clip of her remarks. “Yes, we’ve been to the Moon before … six times!” Duffy wrote. “And even better: NASA Artemis is going back under the leadership of POTUS [U.S. President Donald Trump]. We won the last space race and we will win this one too.” Kardashian has said her doubts stem from alleged past comments by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon after Neil Armstrong, which have long circulated online in edited or misleading form, and that…
Low-level agents are a key part of hybrid warfare — a mix of military, political, economic, and cyber tactics designed to blur the line between war and peace. In mid-October, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a “new comprehensive action plan” to counter hybrid threats, to be reviewed by the National Security Council. Before defences can be put in place, it’s crucial to define which actions count as hybrid warfare. Austrian disinformation analyst Dietmar Pichler explained incidents such as fires, explosions, accidents, attacks, pro-Russian events, or public graffiti should increasingly be assessed for links to hybrid operations. He warned that delays…
Published on 31/10/2025 – 11:04 GMT+1 Thursday marked a milestone in the history of world architecture when Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia officially overtook Germany’s Ulm Münster as the tallest church on the planet. At 162.91 metres high, Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece is just 1.38 metres ahead of the Gothic Lutheran cathedral in Germany, which held the record at 161.53 metres since its completion in 1890. The installation of the first part of the Tower of Jesus Christ at the top of the central nave was the key moment that enabled this new record to be achieved. A crane installed the piece on…
However, traditional tourism players have steered a concerning drift toward an increasingly ‘hotel only’ model that has weakened Europe’s tourism offering and affordable travel options: soaring accommodation prices with fewer, wealthier visitors going to the same places and a concentration of gains in the hands of powerful hotel chains. This might have severe consequences. Populism does not typically thrive in the wealthy districts of the EU’s most popular cities. Instead, it feeds on the frustration of non-urban communities that increasingly feel excluded from prosperity. One of the most overlooked opportunities to bridge this growing divide is the potential of STRs…
More than 79 million tonnes of packaging waste were generated in the EU in 2023, according to the latest figures from Eurostat. While this marks a reduction of 8.7kg per capita compared with 2022, the figure remains 21.2kg higher than in 2013. In 26 EU countries, paper and cardboard made up the largest share of the total packaging waste, with 14 of these countries racking up a share of more than 40% of the total. There were also substantial amounts of plastic packaging waste, at 15.8 million tonnes (19.8% of the total), glass at 15 million tonnes (18.8%), and wood…
