Uzbekistan has used the opening of UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference to present a reform-driven vision for global cooperation – one centred on modernising education, expanding AI ethics, strengthening media literacy, safeguarding cultural heritage and advancing women’s leadership. Addressing heads of state, ministers and delegates from 190 countries, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev unveiled a set of initiatives he hopes will guide UNESCO’s agenda in the coming years: a platform to advance inclusive education for children with special needs, a model School of Artificial Intelligence in Uzbekistan, a global AI ethics forum, an International Institute for Digital Heritage, a UNESCO Academy on Women’s…
The invitation, which has been in the works for months, comes as Brussels and Washington are still going through the implementation of commitments struck in Scotland in July between U.S. President Donald Trump and the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill confirmed the invitation had been extended to Lutnick. Brussels is still pressing Washington for tariff exemptions on sensitive sectors such as spirits and chemicals, and has raised concerns about the U.S. expanding its list of derivative steel products subject to a 50 percent tariff. EU countries will be informed of the invitation on…
At Glenda Spooner Farm in Yeovil, UK, a small foal is trotting into the spotlight. Pam the Shetland was born at the World Horse Welfare rescue and rehoming centre in July 2025, and at barely the size of a spaniel, she has quickly become a firm favourite. Her mother, Sophie, was rescued last summer in poor condition and heavily pregnant. Soon after arriving at the farm, she gave birth to Pam, a tiny but healthy foal. Claire Dickie, Manager at Glenda Spooner Farm, says Pam is one of the smallest she has ever seen. Both mare and foal are now…

Which ones have you seen and do you agree with our picks? 2014: Ich Seh, Ich Seh (Goodnight Mommy) (Dir. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala) An opulent house with large glass windows glows within a secluded Austrian woodland. Inside, a mother (Susanne Wuest) is recovering from…

Published on 31/10/2025 – 16:19 GMT+1 The European Commission on Friday expressed confidence that a deal to allow the UK to take part in one of the EU’s flagship defence programmes will be concluded over the next two weeks with enough time for member states to adjust their rearmament plans. Brussels and London have been engaged in talks since the summer to allow the UK to take part in the bloc’s SAFE programme aimed at boosting joint procurement of European-made weapon systems as the EU looks to rearm aggressively in response to Russia’s threat. EU member states have until the…

Despite a modest increase of only 0.1 percent in prices in October, services price inflation hit its highest level in over six months at 3.4 percent. The metric is closely watched by the European Central Bank (ECB) because of its close link to wage growth, which accelerated to around 4 percent in the second quarter. Persistent services inflation can eventually feed through the rest of the economy, and could drive prices higher across the basket of goods being measured. However, ECB President Christine Lagarde repeated on Thursday that she expects wage growth to slow again in the coming months. The…
