The surprisingly candid comments contradict the stance of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who has insisted the unbalanced pact, which set a 15 percent base tariff on European exports, had nothing to do with maintaining U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for Ukraine. “There is no linkage between the two,” von der Leyen said during a press conference in Finland on Friday, when asked whether security concerns had swayed the EU to agree to the July deal. He acknowledged that governments are weighing what might be possible “under which conditions and reservations,” but stressed: “To discuss this publicly, at this point in time, I consider to be totally wrong.” Pistorius was responding to von der Leyen’s weekend interview with the Financial Times, in which she said Europe was drawing up “pretty precise plans” for a multinational deployment to Ukraine as part of post-war security guarantees. The Commission chief said the plans could involve tens of thousands of troops from European countries, with U.S. backing in areas such as intelligence and command. Von der Leyen argued that robust…

The decision by the students to name their class after Hassan, a politician of Palestinian origin born in a refugee camp and raised in France, has sparked protests in Belgium and France, where Hassan has become known for her radical views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Published on 01/09/2025 – 17:14 GMT+2 Iraq has formally reopened the historic al-Nouri Grand Mosque in the northern city of Mosul, eight years after it was destroyed with explosives by the so-called Islamic State (IS) group. Built in the second half of the 12th century, the mosque stood as an iconic landmark for around 850 years. IS detonated explosives inside the building in 2017 as it struggled to retain control of the city in its battle with Iraqi military forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said that the building’s reconstruction “will remain a milestone, reminding all enemies of the…

Minimalism has not yet won – at least, not everywhere. A new study by storage specialists has revealed which European homes are likely to be the most cluttered, analysing the money spent on items that take up the most space. Sweden takes the top spot with a 98.65 Clutter Score. That is largely driven by high spending on furniture (5.5%) and clothing. Second-placed Netherlands devotes the highest share to clutter-related items (17.2%), particularly furniture(6.5%) and recreational goods (1.1%). Third- and fourth-placed Germany and Austria are obsessed with furniture and household maintenance, with spending scores of 6.4% and 5%, respectively. On the…
Published on 01/09/2025 – 14:39 GMT+2 Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is developing a new chip for artificial intelligence (AI), according to several media reports. The move comes after the United States banned Nvidia from selling its most powerful chips, the Blackwell chip, to China in April, arguing it was necessary to safeguard US national and economic security as the AI global race gains pace. The US appeared to reverse course last month after Nvidia agreed to pay the government 15 per cent of what it earns from chip sales to China. While selling the Blackwell chip to China is still…
Parubiy’s murder is the latest in a string of killings of prominent Ukrainian politicians and activists this year, following the assassinations of former MP Iryna Farion in Lviv and anti-Russian activist Demian Hanul in Odesa. Parubiy played a major role in leading Ukraine’s pro-Western Euromaidan Revolution in 2013-2014, which ousted the Kremlin puppet regime of Viktor Yanukovych, who is now in exile in Russia. In the winter of 2014, Parubiy served as the commander of protestor self-defense units that clashed with rogue police squads on the streets of Kyiv. He was also one of the top ideologists pushing for Ukraine’s…
Published on 01/09/2025 – 14:48 GMT+2 The EU Ombudsman has opened an inquiry into the European Commission’s failure to respond to concerns about the appointment process for the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The Commission now has until 12 September to either reply to the complainant or acknowledge receipt of the letter setting out the concerns and indicate when it will reply, the office told Euronews. The inquiry only concerns the Commission’s failure to reply to the complainant, not the broader issues addressed in the letter. Euronews previously reported that the EU Ombudsman has received two complaints about the…
