If confirmed by Ukraine’s parliament, Svyrydenko would replace current Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who has been in post since March 2020. Zelenskyy met with Shmyhal on Sunday and discussed strategic steps for the transformation of the executive branch, the second major wartime reshuffle of the government. “There will be changes. In particular, in the defense sector, in all projects for the sake of our stability — the state and society,” Zelenskyy said of the shake-up after meeting Shmyhal. “We also need to significantly reduce noncritical state expenditures and, as much as possible, through deregulation, direct public forces for the sake…

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a “productive” meeting on Monday, the Ukrainian leader said, as anticipation grew over a major announcement Trump said he would make on Monday. Kellogg and Zelenskyy discussed what the US and Ukraine could “practically do”, including “strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, joint production, and procurement of defence weapons in collaboration with Europe,” as Ukraine continues to defend itself from Russia’s all-out war, now in its fourth year. The meeting comes after Trump teased a “major statement” on Russia on Sunday night ahead of a…
It would mark the end of months of political paralysis in the Belgian capital, where governance has stalled amid protracted coalition talks. Brussels is currently grappling with a record regional debt of around €15 billion, which is projected to rise to €16 billion by the end of 2025, raising concerns about a looming financial crisis. The deal explicitly excludes the Flemish nationalist N-VA party, led by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, from formally joining the coalition. However, as a compromise, MR has proposed ceding its secretary of state post to a nonpartisan figure from civil society who is acceptable…
Brussels is now trying to strike the right balance between keeping negotiating lines open and ensuring retaliation is still seen as a credible threat. This was on full display over the weekend, when the EU executive, which coordinates trade on behalf of the EU’s 27 member states, delayed the implementation of a first package of countermeasures, while inching forward on a second raft of retaliatory tariffs on around €72 billion of U.S. exports. “The feeling on our side was that we are very close to an agreement. We have been negotiating this agreement in principle for weeks,” the trade commissioner…

Trump said he was “very disappointed” with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. “You know, I thought he was somebody that meant what he said. But he’ll talk so beautifully, and then he’ll bomb people at night. We don’t like that.” “There’s a little bit of a problem there,” he added. Putin has increased attacks on Ukraine over the summer, deploying more than 500 drones and missiles almost daily. He has also ignored Trump’s calls for a ceasefire, while Kyiv has agreed to one if Russia stops attacking Ukraine. NATO’s Rutte is scheduled to meet with Trump as well as with his…
The chancellor is back out on the road to start the government’s re-launch week, ahead of the parliamentary recess. In today’s episode, Sky News’ Sam Coates and Politico’s Anne McElvoy explain how comments on a proposed wealth tax by Rachel Reeves’s cabinet colleagues may have already put her in a tricky situation. Though France’s credit rating has not been downgraded this year, the yield on the country’s 10-year bond has crept well over 3 percent in 2025 and in recent days has been higher than that of Cyprus, Portugal and Spain — meaning financial markets view Europe’s second-biggest economy as a risker investment than those other countries. Bayrou has promised to bring France’s budget deficit down from 5.8 percent of gross domestic product in 2024 to 5.4 percent this year as part of the government’s plan to ratchet the figure down to 3 percent of GDP, as required by European Union rules,…
