Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev drew attention to the weakening credibility of global institutions. “Serious violations of international law have become ‘a new normality,’ which undermines global stability and erodes confidence between peoples, between political leaders, and between states,” he said. He reaffirmed the need for a strong international governance in tumultuous times, for which the UN needs to adapt and reform. “A central pillar of this bold effort to renew the UN should be a reform of the Security Council,” Tokayev said, adding that Asia, Africa, and…

By Euronews with AP Published on 25/09/2025 – 10:41 GMT+2 The birds had been rescued after washing up along Uruguay’s coast suffering from hypothermia, malnutrition and injuries caused by fishing nets. The Maldonado Society for the Conservation of Biodiversity (SOCOBIOMA) treated the penguins with veterinary care, food and time to allow their plumage to regain the waterproofing essential for survival at sea. Volunteers said many of the animals arrived weak, anaemic and unable to feed themselves due to a shortage of fish in nearby waters. Once released from cages, the penguins slowly crossed the sand and entered the Atlantic Ocean as crowds applauded.…
When Nathan Ames patented the first moving staircase in 1859, little did he know that 166 years later the escalator would become the latest fixation of Trump and his MAGA base. At the United Nations general assembly this week, Donald Trump delivered a sprawling speech that often felt like experimental free form jazz. Except the avant-garde approach to the music genre requires a great deal of improvisational talent. When he wasn’t describing climate change as the “greatest con job ever”, he was singling out how European nations are “going to hell” over their migration policies or waxing lyrical about his…
Sarkozy, 70, is still awaiting sentencing but is expected to be able to walk out of court a free man by appealing the verdict, which would push sentencing until after the appeal. The former president was joined in court by his wife, Carla Bruni, and three sons: Pierre, Jean and aspiring politician Louis. Sarkozy has repeatedly professed his innocence and claimed to be the victim of a smear campaign coordinated by Gadhafi’s allies after the former French president led the NATO effort to overthrow the Libyan dictator in 2011. The conservative Sarkozy has had repeated run-ins with the law since…
A Paris court found former French President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty on Thursday of criminal conspiracy, in a case which has seen him stand trial for allegedly accepting illegal campaign financing from the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to secure his 2007 election victory. However, the court acquitted Sarkozy on Thursday of passive corruption, embezzlement of Libyan public funds and illegal election campaign financing. The criminal conspiracy charge relates to his involvement in a group that prepared a corruption offence between 2005 and 2007, the court said. The court is still detailing its ruling and has not immediately sentenced the…
US President Donald Trump has called for an investigation after claiming he was the victim of “triple sabotage” during his visit to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. In a long message posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump insisted that he had experienced “three sinister events”, which included the sudden halting of an escalator he and First Lady Melania Trump were on. Trump argued that the incident was not a coincidence, citing a report in the Times of London that UN staffers had joked about turning off an escalator during his visit. “The people that did it…
Publishing the name of a professional athlete online because they have broken anti-doping rules is against the EU’s privacy laws, a top EU lawyer has said. The fresh opinion from Advocate General Dean Spielmann weighs a case taking place in Austria, where four professional athletes who have broken anti-doping rules are arguing that publication of their details online would breach the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Austrian law requires details including the athletes’ names, sporting discipline, duration of their exclusion and the reasons for that exclusion to be published on the websites of the Austrian anti-doping agency and an associated…
Demonstrators waved Israeli flags and carried signs demanding the release of hostages still held in the enclave. Some protesters appealed directly to U.S. President Donald Trump, who is expected to meet Netanyahu at the White House, urging him to intervene in efforts to free the remaining captives. Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza, about 20 of them believed by Israel to be alive, nearly two years after the October 7 Hamas-led attack that killed around 1,200 people. Israel’s military response has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas. While the figures do…
The German economy should grow again for the first time in three years this year, but its long-term prospects remain challenging, five leading economic institutes said in a new forecast. Europe’s largest economy is expected to grow by 0.2 percent this year, before accelerating to 1.3 percent in 2026 and 1.4 percent in 2027, primarily driven by the federal government’s expansionary fiscal policy. The forecasts are largely unchanged from the institutes’ spring forecast round. “The German economy is still on shaky ground,” said Geraldine Dany-Knedlik, head of Forecasting and Economic Policy at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).…
