Russia has again ramped up its attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid as the weather became noticeably colder, just as Moscow did every autumn since its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Although Ukraine’s air defence has improved significantly and is now capable of intercepting most of the deadly drones Russia launches daily in droves, Kyiv is hoping for something beyond the additional support it requested from partners. Israeli authorities said on Wednesday that they received the remains of two more hostages, hours after the military said that one of the bodies previously turned over was not that of a hostage, adding to the confusion in the fragile peace deal. The coffins carrying the remains were transferred by the Red Cross from Hamas late Wednesday, and upon returning to Israel, were sent to a forensic lab in Tel Aviv, according to the military, which cautioned that the hostages’ identities had yet to be verified. Christopher Cash, 30, a former researcher for a Conservative MP, and Christopher Berry, a 33-year-old teacher, both denied allegations that they passed sensitive information to an alleged Chinese intelligence agent between 2021 and 2023. The Crown Prosecution Service unexpectedly dropped the charges against them last month, prompting a political backlash. The U.K.’s director of public prosecutions said the case collapsed because evidence could not be obtained from the government referring to China as a national security threat. The opposition Conservatives, who were in power when the men were charged in April 2024, have blamed the current Labour government, claiming it…

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands have pledged $2 billion in four separate PURL packages. And on Wednesday, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Finland among others were poised to finalize a fifth package, according to three NATO diplomats, who like others quoted in this story were granted anonymity to speak freely. “Thanks to funding from allies, we are providing Ukraine with critical U.S. equipment,” NATO chief Mark Rutte said as alliance defense ministers met in Brussels. “And today, we heard from ally after ally about new contributions.” But that growing support is also leaving those who haven’t contributed…

However, opposition from Hungary in recent years has seen joint statements issued on behalf of the remaining 26, with Slovakia typically taking part. “I am not interested in dealing with new sanctions packages against Russia until I see, in the conclusions of the [European Council] summit, political instructions for the European Commission on how to address the crisis in the automotive industry and the high energy prices that are making the European economy completely uncompetitive,” Fico insisted. “The Slovak government…
