In the early hours of Sunday, a coach overturned on a motorway in north east Hungary between Mezőkeresztes and Mezőnagymihály, Hungarian authorities reported. Units already at the scene entered the coach through its windows and have been rescuing passengers trapped inside, it added.

At 3 a.m. on Sunday, the disaster management service reported that firefighters had so far rescued thirty-five people from the coach, while several passengers had been trapped beneath the vehicle.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar published on his social media about the coach crash, reporting the deaths of a dozen passengers.

“12 people lost their lives and at least ten were seriously injured during the night, when a Polish coach overturned into a ditch on the M3 motorway,” the prime minister said.

Péter Magyar offered his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery. He also thanked those taking part in the rescue operation for their work.

The Polish foreign minister has also confirmed the disaster, saying that they are in constant contact with the Hungarian authorities, but the details still need to be confirmed.

While, Polish President Karol Nawrocki sent his thoughts to the families of the victims, Nawrocki said, “I join in prayer and extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims”.

According to information provided by Hungarian Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai 47 people were travelling on the coach, several of whom were seriously injured, adding that “The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has been taken into custody”.
