For decades, international beauty pageants have been synonymous with two names: Miss Universe and Miss World. However on Friday night, another event competing for global eyeballs and social media shockwaves will crown its winner in southern Poland.

Still relatively unknown outside beauty pageant circles, Miss Supranational has quietly grown into one of the industry’s biggest international contests, welcoming contestants from more than 60 countries and building a reputation that is increasingly attracting national pageant organisations looking beyond the traditional “Big Two”.

A little Polish town in the global spotlight

Founded in 2009, Miss Supranational is the flagship international event of Poland’s annual Festival of Beauty (Festiwal Piękna), a three-day celebration of pageantry that also hosts the finals of Mister Supranational and Miss Poland. Each summer, the festival transforms the southern town of Nowy Sącz, a town of around 80,000 inhabitants in the south of Poland.

For one evening every summer, this normally quiet town becomes the centre of the international pageant world, hosting delegates from across five continents, international broadcasters and millions of online viewers following the competition on YouTube and television. The pageant has become one of Nowy Sącz’s most visible international cultural events, helping put the town on the global map.

Why is everyone suddenly paying attention?

The format of this pageant competition goes beyond traditional judging criteria. Digital visibility, communication skills and audience engagement now carry as much weight as runway performance and stage presence.

The competition’s growing influence is perhaps best illustrated by France.

Earlier this year, the Miss France organisation announced it would not send a contestant to Miss Universe 2026, following criticism of the previous edition, and instead chose Miss Supranational as its main international competition.

That contestant, Eve Gilles, enters Friday’s final as one of the delegates to watch. She has already won the Photogenic Award and reached the final stages of the Supra Chat challenge, placing her among the contestants tipped by pageant observers as a potential finalist.

How is it different?

Miss Supranational doesn’t reinvent the beauty pageant format—but it does organise it differently.

One notable change comes after the winner is crowned.

While Miss Universe winners have traditionally relocated abroad to work closely with the organisation throughout their reign, Miss Supranational winners spend only around a week in Poland before returning to their home country. According to the organisation, the goal is to help the new titleholder build media exposure and professional connections in her domestic market before beginning an international schedule of appearances later in the year. Organisers describe the title as a platform for building a long-term career rather than simply winning a televised competition.

The winner receives a cash prize of $50,000, a new crown and a year of wardrobe support from partner brands, while also becoming an ambassador for charitable initiatives and international promotional events.

The judging doesn’t stop behind the scenes

According to Brand Development Consultant Werner Wessels, judges observe contestants throughout the competition, assessing not only stage performances but also interviews, public appearances and how delegates interact with fellow contestants and staff over several weeks.

“Anyone can be amazing for five minutes,” Wessels has said, explaining that the organisation values consistency as much as performance.

Another distinctive feature is a recent rule change allowing former Miss Supranational contestants to compete again after a two-year interval—a policy that contrasts with Miss Universe, where delegates are generally allowed to represent their country at the international competition only once. The organisation has also expanded eligibility to include divorced women and mothers, reflecting broader changes across the pageant industry.

Contestants also take part in a closed-door interview discussing their ambitions and community engagement through “From the Ground Up”, Miss Supranational’s social impact initiative. While the organisation says these conversations form part of the assessment process, it does not publish a detailed scoring system showing how each element contributes to the final result.
