At least four people have been trapped after a four-storey block of flats collapsed in central Athens on Tuesday, the Greek fire brigade said.

Emergency services have been deployed to the scene to help with the search and rescue operation and footage shown on local media showed workers walking in the rubble looking for signs of life.

It is not immediately clear why the block in the Petralona neighbourhood, which housed seven apartments, collapsed.

Construction work was reportedly under way in the building next door, local media reported.

This is a developing story and our journalists are working on further updates.
