Don’t bet against Officer Judy Hopps.
American animated buddy cop comedy Zootopia 2 has been breaking records since its debut in cinemas over the Thanksgiving period last November.
It became the highest global animated opening of all time, the highest global debut of 2025, the highest global opening for any animated film in Disney history, and crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in just 17 days. It also became Walt Disney Animation Studios fifth billion-dollar title since 2013, following in the footsteps of Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2 and Zootopia.
Not half bad for the crime-solving rabbit officer and her fox con-artist partner.
Now, the sequel to the hit 2016 film has become Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated film of all time, taking $1.7bn at the global box office.
It overtakes previous record holder Inside Out 2 ($1.69bn) and becomes the ninth most successful film in global box office history.
“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement. “We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers… Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”
However impressive that may be, Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s animated triumph is still far from the top spot on the animated podium, which will be hard to top. That honour goes to last year’s Ne Zha 2, China’s sequel to 2019’s Ne Zha.
The second fantasy adventure film made $2.2bn last year and is comfortably at the fifth spot in the ranking of the most successful films of all time.
The majority of Ne Zha 2’s takings came from China, where Zootopia 2 still managed to amass a whopping $618.9 million.
