Pope Leo XIV landed in Gran Canaria on Thursday, where he will begin the third leg of his visit to Spain and follow a packed schedule focused on migration and meeting the faithful.

The pontiff touched down at Gando Air Base shortly before 10:40 local time and was greeted by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, together with national, regional and local authorities. Strong winds forced changes to be made to part of the protocol planned for his arrival.

After the official welcome, Leo XIV travelled to the Arguineguín harbour to meet migrants, as well as staff and volunteers involved in their care. Later, he will visit the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he will also be presented with the Gold Key of the city.

The day will conclude with a large open-air mass at the Gran Canaria Stadium, which is expected to draw around 40,000 people. On Friday, the pontiff will continue his journey on Tenerife.
