Clashes broke out in Paris on Tuesday at the end of a demonstration by school pupils demanding more funding for education.

The footage shows riot police firing tear gas as demonstrators throw objects and fireworks, sending white smoke across Place de la Nation.

Police and protesters face each other in the streets as officers move to disperse the crowd.

The demonstration was part of nationwide action over staff shortages, deteriorating school buildings and a lack of basic resources.

More than 250,000 people took part across France, according to official figures, including 56,000 in Paris.

The unrest has also intensified criticism of police tactics following serious injuries to several teenagers during the demonstrations.
