Canadian police on Wednesday identified 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar as the gunwoman in Tuesday’s mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

The suspect killed her mother and stepbrother before shooting six people dead at a local high school, including a teacher and five students.

The remote mining town of about 2,400 people held a candlelight vigil as flags were lowered nationwide.

The suspect once held a firearms licence that had lapsed, and weapons seized from her home were later returned.

Officials say they want answers and will examine how to prevent further mass shootings in Canada, where such attacks remain rare.
