The 1990s were the last decade before technology took over our lives and attention spans.

In Britain especially, there was a feeling of unrestrained optimism and rebellion, which in turn fuelled a chaotic surge of youthful creativity that intersected with countercultural movements.

Tate Britain is celebrating this with more than 100 objects from the era, including the raw art of Tracey Emin, the rock n’ roll fashion of Vivienne Westwood, and early films from director Steve McQueen.

Meticulously curated by Edward Enninful, the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, the exhibition acts like a portal to a lost time; conjuring memories of when flipping through a glossy magazine in your bedroom could shape both inner and outer worlds.

‘The 90s: Art and Fashion’ runs until 14 February 2027 at Tate Britain in London, UK.
