Dozens of tourists gathered to watch over 400 baby sea turtles being released into the sea at Vila Maria beach on the island of São Tomé.
The release of the turtles, which is overseen as part of an initiative of the Tatô programme, celebrates the beginning of the turtles’ long journey. São Tomé and Príncipe, home to five of the world’s seven sea turtle species, faces constant challenges in conservation or marine and coastal ecosystems.
The Tatô programme, in collaboration with local communities and organisations, plays a vital role in protecting these turtles through research, advocacy and sustainable practices.
