Prime Minister Keir Starmer is braced for a tough weekend as results from Britain’s biggest set of elections since 2024 pour in.

Voters have picked more than 5,000 English councilors in 136 councils, including all 32 London boroughs; six mayors in England; all 129 members of the Scottish Parliament; plus all 96 members of an expanded Welsh parliament, the Senedd.

It’s a crucial test of the embattled Starmer’s authority — and could show British politics splintering in multiple directions as insurgent populists in the shape of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Zack Polanksi’s Green Party make major gains. Plaid Cymru in Wales and the governing Scottish National Party in Scotland could also pile on the pain.
