Choosing where to go on a ski holiday involves more than finding a great resort, especially if you have a need for speed, slopes and adventure.

Snow conditions, the reliability of snowfall throughout the season and whether lifts and slopes are open can make a huge difference to your ski holiday.

Although no destination can completely promise perfect conditions, Inghams Ski has analysed more than 100 popular ski resorts and regions in the Northern Hemisphere to create the “Reliable Ski Score” ranking, with scores out of 100.

The travel operator measured each resort for mountain running (35%), which looked at the average percentage of lifts and slopes operating during the core season; and for snow adequacy (25%), which looked at the percentage of core-season days with 30cm or more at the base station.

Other factors included consistency (20%), or how steady mountain running was from season to season; downside protection (12%), which is the gap between the average season and the worst one; as well as average snow depth of the mountain (8%).

Each resort and region’s historical performance was studied during the core season period of 5 January to 20 March across seven Northern Hemisphere winter seasons between 2017-2018 and 2025-2026, with the exception of the seasons impacted by Covid-19.

The results see Italian, Austrian and French destinations dominate the top 10 ranking of Europe’s most reliable ski resorts and regions.

Top 10 most reliable ski resorts and regions in Europe

How the destinations scored out of 100 in the study:

  • 1. Pontedilegno-Tonale, Italy: 93.1
  • 2. Obertauern, Austria: 92.9
  • 3. Les Arcs, France: 92.2
  • 4. Les 3 Vallées, France: 91.1
  • 5. Alpe d’Huez, France: 90.5
  • 6. Kitzsteinhorn, Austria: 89.6
  • 7. Filzmoos, Austria: 89.5
  • 8. Tignes-Val d’Isère, France: 89.4
  • 9. Espace San Bernardo (La Rosière/La Thuile), France: 89.2
  • 10. Damüls Mellau, Austria: 89.1

A look at the top three most reliable ski resorts and regions

Pontedilegno-Tonale, Italy

According to the Inghams study, Pontedilegno-Tonale in northern Italy is Europe’s most reliable region for skiing.

The mountainous area between Valle Camonica in Lombardy and Val di Sole in Trentino is a standout destination for its glaciers, nature reserves and high-altitude areas. It was highlighted for its consistent performance across reliability factors, giving skiers “practically hiccup-free exploring alongside snow-sure slopes”.

The ski area is home to 46 slopes, with the highest point of the resort sitting at 3,016 metres above sea level. Ponte di Legno’s slopes take skiers through dense pine and spruce forest, while Passo del Tonale sits at the foot of the Presena glacier and the skiing area features more than 44km of slopes.

During selected dates of the ski season, Inghams recommends taking advantage of the “Alba in Quota”, or “dawn at high altitude” window of opportunity. Here, lifts open earlier for skiers to experience sunrise skiing before the slopes officially open for the day.

Obertauern, Austria

In Austria’s Salzburg region, at 1,752 metres, the Obertauern ski resort emerged as the second most reliable in Europe.

It offers beginners and advanced skiers alike more than 100km of slopes across a long season from November through to May. And, as Inghams highlighted, the area is made up entirely of ski-in/ski-out hotels, giving visitors direct access to pistes from their accommodation.

Obertauern is also replete with cross-country ski trails, with routes ranging from six to 23km, including the medium-difficulty Gnadenalm. At an altitude of 1,350 metres, the trail sits halfway between Obertauern and Untertauern, earning the name “snow basin” because of its unique location.

Les Arcs, France

Rounding up the top three is Les Arcs. The French ski resort nestled in the heart of the Alps is set amid alpine meadows, glaciers and a peak that reaches 3,226 metres.

The mountain resort features 200km of ski trails with a winter season set to start on 12 December this year and will last until 24 April 2027.

Part of Paradiski, one of the world’s largest interconnected ski areas, Les Arcs is described as an “excellent choice for both freestyle enthusiasts as well as those looking for reliable conditions”. Les Arcs is also connected to Peisey-Vallandry and La Plagne via the iconic Vanoise Express cable car. Paradiski features 425km of slopes and 258 ski runs between the three linked resorts.
