Saunasaari: A sauna island just opened in the middle of Helsinki

No trip to Finland would be complete without a visit to a sauna – and now those travelling to Helsinki can book in for a visit to an island entirely dedicated to the bathing ritual.

Saunasaari, which opened on 26 June, has several separate saunas, including a large traditional smoke sauna, the only one of its kind in the Finnish capital.

The island is also home to two traditional Finnish wood-fired hot tubs, aka “palju”, which sit next to the water so you can enjoy the views over the capital.

The positioning is ideal for those looking to combine their sauna or palju experience with a cold dip in the Baltic Sea.

“The Finnish archipelago, traditional smoke sauna, open-fire cooking and genuine hospitality are all deeply rooted in our identity,” said Nina Stenros, who created Saunasaari with Riku Stenros.

“We wanted to create an experience where visitors can step into that world without leaving Helsinki.”

How to visit Saunasaari

Saunasaari is a quick water taxi away from Helsinki’s Market Square, and you can book a sauna and dine experience every Friday and Saturday evening until 8 August.

The package includes access to the saunas and palju, as well as a char-grilled dinner menu cooked at the summer kitchen RÖK.

Dishes on offer include whole smoked fish or open-fire grilled beef entrecôte, while vegetarians can enjoy grilled summer cabbage.

The island is also available to rent for private events.
