Snubs, surprises and an unpredictable awards season continues… The SAG Awards are a historically accurate bellwether for the Oscars – which bodes well for ‘Wicked’. Here’s the lowdown.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) have unveiled its 2025 nominations, and it’s a surprising line-up in many respects, with plenty of notable snubs and a nominees list that cements 2025 awards season as one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.
Wicked and Shōgun, the runaway winner when it comes to TV at the Golden Globes, dominated the nominations. Both nabbed five noms apiece, including an unexpected acting nod for Jonathan Bailey for Wicked.
Just behind them is the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown with four nominations, while Golden Globe favourite Emilia Pérez only scored three nominations. That said, one of those noms was for Karla Sofia Gascón in the Acting category, a historic nomination as it makes her the first openly transgender performer nominated in the SAG film categories.
Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner Anora also scored three nominations.
Historically, the SAG awards are a reliable bellwether for the Acting and Best Picture categories at the Oscars, so today’s nominations bode well for Wicked, which only left the Golden Globes with one award – the new trophy for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures.

Notable snubs this year include Sing Sing and The Brutalist in the Best Film Ensemble. The latter only received one nomination for Adrien Brody in the Acting category, despite The Brutalist winning Best Director and Best Film (Drama) at the Globes on Sunday. Equally surprising were no nominations for Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Denzel Washinton (Gladiator II) and Sebastian Stan, who won Best Actor at the Globes for A Different Man.
The announcement of the 31st annual SAG Awards was delayed as the nominations come as devastating wildfires tear through the Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
