“Today, the masters have decided: no equality, no liberty, no fraternity for Romanians,” Georgescu wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Long live France and Brussels, long live their colony named Romania,” he wrote in Romanian.

“While America is becoming great again, Europe and Romania have become petty, corrupt and under dictatorship,” he added in English.

A few hundred protesters were gathered in front of the building housing the Constitutional Court, waving Romanian flags. They booed and chanted “thieves!” and “freedom!” upon finding out the top court’s decision, Romanian news channel Digi24 reported.

It was also the Constitutional Court that annulled Georgescu’s victory last year, flagging undeclared campaign financing and fraudulent use of digital technologies, with an alleged Russian operation seen as having influenced the result.

Moscow has denied any links to Georgescu. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday any election that doesn’t involve Georgescu was illegitimate.

The decision to keep Georgescu out of the race is expected to be met with backlash from the Trump administration, which includes key officials who support Georgescu.
