Just hours before Spain face Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, captain Rodri has highlighted what he believes has been central to La Roja’s success: the strong understanding between head coach Luis de la Fuente and his players.

“I think the combination of Luis de la Fuente and all of us is unique,” the midfielder told RTVE.

Rodri said Spain’s run to the final was the result of “a very long and very beautiful process, a slow maturation”, built on the coach’s trust in the squad from the beginning.

The Manchester City midfielder also reflected on his return to form after suffering a serious injury 18 months ago.

“The most important thing was to have continuity again. Being able to enjoy that at this World Cup has helped me bring out the level I am showing,” he said.

Rodri also thanked Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for supporting his recovery and allowing him the time he needed to return to full fitness ahead of the tournament.

Looking ahead to the final against Argentina, Rodri said Spain’s focus cannot be solely on Lionel Messi, warning that the reigning world champions are strong across the pitch.

“Argentina are much more than Messi. They are the reigning champions and the team to beat,” he said.

The midfielder also acknowledged Messi’s influence, saying: “The further he is from the penalty area, the better. But Messi doesn’t just score goals, he orchestrates the play, pops up between the lines and you have to keep an eye on him in virtually every area of the pitch.”

Spain are aiming to win their first World Cup since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, completing a run of major international titles under Luis de la Fuente after winning the Nations League and the European Championship.
