Control of the House of Representatives remains up for grabs.

Republicans have clinched the US Senate, retaking control after four years of Democratic rule.

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice won the state’s Senate seat, and Bernie Moreno won in Ohio, securing the Senate for Republicans in a widely anticipated shift that ensures at least one legislative chamber will be led by Donald Trump’s party.

There are 100 US Senators, two for each state. Democrats previously had a one-seat majority.

The results mean Republicans will be well-positioned in the confirmation process for the incoming president’s picks for Cabinet — their most senior officials — and to appoint conservative judges to the US Supreme Court if any current justices retire.

The Republicans’ Senate win will also kick off an internal battle to succeed Mitch McConnell.

Control of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber, remains up for grabs. It’s currently controlled by Republicans by a narrow margin.
