A new three-part documentary series about Friends star Matthew Perry has been announced and will be released on Netflix next month.
Titled The One With Matthew Perry, the documentary will explore the actor’s life and struggles as told by the people who were closest to him.
Netflix’s Press release reads: “Anchored by never-before-heard testimonies from Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick and his lifelong best friends, the three-part series, which features unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family’s private archive, traces his journey from rising comedic star to the man the world still loves as their favourite Friend. First-hand memories from his creative collaborators and friends who adored and supported him are woven with candid new details on his private struggles.”
It is not yet known whether any of the Friends cast will appear in the docuseries.
“It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life – to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction,” Perry Bowick said in a statement.
“As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be and the work to which I’ve devoted my life. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind.”
The actor, known worldwide for playing Chandler Bing on the celebrated 90s sitcom, was found unresponsive in a hot tub in his Los Angeles home on 28 October 2023. He was later pronounced dead, at the age of 54.
He died from “acute effects of ketamine” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. The autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid use disorder, as contributing to his death.
In May, Perry’s assistant was jailed for three years and five months fo his role in the actor’s death, while infamous drug dealer Jasveen Sangha was sentenced to 15 years for supplying him drugs.
The One With Matthew Perry is due to debut on Netflix on 27 October.
