Mango founder death inquiry: judge looks for possible accomplices of the suspected son

The judicial investigation into the death of Isak Andic, founder of fashion giant Mango, has taken a new turn. According to a report in the newspaper ‘El País’, the judge in Martorell handling the case has widened the inquiry to determine whether any third parties were involved in what happened, and not only the businessman’s son, Jonathan Andic, who remains the chief suspect in an alleged homicide.

According to a court order made public on Wednesday, the judge believes it is necessary to clarify the possible role of other people in Jonathan Andic’s circle, among them a family therapist identified as J.L., who, according to the investigation, may have taken part in or influenced the businessman’s son’s plans to secure an inheritance while his father was still alive.

The judge has also authorised new measures to analyse phone calls and messages linked to Jonathan Andic, particularly during a trip to Quito (Ecuador) in March 2025. Investigators want to establish whether there were any significant contacts that could help reconstruct the events before and after the Mango founder’s death.

Jonathan Andic has denied any involvement in his father’s death and maintains that the fatal incident was the result of an accident. Isak Andic died in December 2024 after falling into a ravine while hiking in the Montserrat mountains, an incident that was initially treated as an accident. However, the emergence of new evidence led investigators to reopen the case and focus suspicion on the son of the Mango founder.

In May, Jonathan Andic was arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra as the alleged person responsible for his father’s death. Although he was released after posting bail of one million euros, he remains subject to precautionary measures, including the seizure of his passport and an obligation to report regularly to the court.

The judge maintains that there are indications pointing to a possible active and premeditated involvement by Jonathan Andic in his father’s death. Among the factors examined are family tensions, financial disputes and the son’s insistence on receiving part of his inheritance before the businessman’s death.

The defence decries a “trial by public opinion”

The defence strategy of Jonathan Andic has moved beyond the courts and into the arena of public opinion. His lawyer, Cristóbal Martell, argues that leaks from the investigation, the publication of details of the case and the image of Andic in handcuffs during his arrest have helped create what he calls a “premature public conviction” before any court ruling has been handed down. The defence finds this particularly troubling because, if the case goes to trial, it will be decided by a jury made up of ordinary citizens.

In recent weeks, those close to Jonathan Andic have launched a public campaign to defend his version that his father’s death was an accident. Among other initiatives, they have circulated a personal letter, submitted alternative expert reports and challenged the actions of the Mossos d’Esquadra and some of the evidence gathered during the investigation.

The Andic family has publicly closed ranks around Jonathan Andic since his arrest and insists he is innocent. Those close to him maintain that there is no conclusive evidence linking him to his father’s death and are calling for his presumption of innocence to be respected while the investigation continues.
