How to Rent a Car in Athens Without a Credit Card

Most travelers assume a credit card is mandatory for renting a car in Greece. That is not always true. Athens has rental options that accept debit cards, prepaid cards, or even cash arrangements. Knowing where to look saves time and avoids last-minute stress at the airport counter.

Why Rental Companies Ask for a Credit Card

The standard reason is the security deposit. Agencies hold a blocked amount on the card as a guarantee against damage or fuel costs. The hold can range from 200 to 1,500 euros depending on the car class and rental terms. A credit card makes that process automatic for them.

But the deposit requirement is separate from the payment method. Some companies release the hold immediately after return. Others offer zero-deposit options outright. These exist, and Athens has a reasonable number of them.

What Documents You Actually Need

  • Valid passport or national ID
  • Full driving licence held for at least one year
  • Debit or prepaid card in your name (for companies that accept them)
  • Booking confirmation from your rental provider

Some local agencies in Athens also accept a cash deposit at pickup. The amount is agreed in advance and returned on the day you bring the car back. Always confirm this in writing before arrival.

Debit Card Rentals: What to Expect

Condition Credit Card Debit Card
Deposit required Often blocked, not charged May be charged and refunded
Acceptance rate Universal Selective, varies by agency
Insurance included Depends on policy Depends on policy
No-deposit option Available with some providers Available with some providers

Tips for Booking Without a Credit Card in Athens

  1. Filter search results specifically for debit card or no-deposit rentals before comparing prices.
  2. Book in advance. No-deposit slots are limited and fill up faster in summer.
  3. Read the insurance terms. Full coverage should include collision damage waiver and theft protection.
  4. Confirm the pickup location. Athens airport and city centre pickups have different agency options.
  5. Ask about fuel policy. Full-to-full is safer than full-to-empty when budgeting.

Athens Pickup Locations Worth Knowing

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos handles most arrivals. The rental desks are in the arrivals hall. City centre pickups near Syntagma or Piraeus port are also common for travellers arriving by ferry or train. Local agencies sometimes offer better rates than airport counters, particularly for week-long rentals.

Getting the Best Rate

Comparing prices across multiple providers is the fastest way to save money. International chains and local Greek companies often list very different rates for the same dates. A comparison platform that shows both side by side gives a clearer picture. If you want to rent a car in Athens without a credit card, FindYCar lists options from international and local agencies together, including no-deposit and full-insurance deals. Prices update in real time so you see what is actually available for your travel dates.

Athens is best explored by car. The coastal road to Cape Sounion, day trips to Delphi, or a drive through the Peloponnese all require your own wheels. Sorting out the rental terms before you land makes the trip start better.
