The European Central Bank on Wednesday said Christine Lagarde has not made a decision on when to stand down as president, following a media report suggesting that she was considering an early resignation.

According to the Financial Times report, Lagarde is expected to leave her position before her eight-year term expires in October 2027, allowing outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron to plan the succession for one of the EU’s most important institutions, ahead of France’s presidential elections in April next year.

Macron cannot run again and the far-right National Rally is consistently polling ahead of rivals, which would shake up French and European politics.
