It’s almost a decade since the referendum on leaving the EU – and it feels like Sir Keir Starmer has turned up the dial on his Brexit rhetoric. He said it would be “reckless” to use Brexit as a template for foreign policy. Sam and Anne discuss what the PM had to say. Elsewhere, how good is the UK-US zero-tariff drugs deal really, and how are voters feeling about Labour as the budget dust starts to settle? Anne has some intel on the race to replace Lord Mandelson as the UK’s Ambassador to the United States. Plus, a listener asks…
A peaceful rally in Sofia turned violent as tens of thousands of Bulgarians protested the government’s 2026 draft budget. Initially calm, the demonstration saw young crowds chanting “Resignation” and demanding revisions. Tensions rose when small groups moved toward ruling party headquarters and threw chairs at buildings and police. Footage showed clashes, burning garbage containers and vandalized police vehicles. Days earlier, the government withdrew the draft budget after similar protests and pledged renewed dialogue with employers and unions.
Illegal wildlife trading is one of the world’s most profitable environmental crimes. International specialists at the 20th CITES Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, estimated that this kind of crime generates from €6.6 billion to €21.9 billion annually and impacts thousands of species. International conservation assessments show that over 40,000 species are currently threatened with extinction. Many of these species are targeted due to illegal commercial demand. Increasing threats, including illegal trade, habitat destruction, and environmental degradation, demand stronger protection measures. As a result, countries and institutions are turning to modern technologies such as AI, digital monitoring, and DNA-based identification to keep…
It’s been one year since Ursula von der Leyen began her second term as European Commission president, and Europe’s sustainability agenda has been turned on its head. A backlash against environmental regulation is in full swing, with political groups from the center to the far right intent on watering down laws that were often only recently agreed. Internationally, Donald Trump’s return to the White House is pressuring Brussels to loosen its own green rulebook, while China is outpacing Europe in the global clean-tech race. The result: rising uncertainty for European industry. Against this backdrop, POLITICO’s Sustainable Future Summit takes on…

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Lebanon’s tradition of interfaith coexistence Monday as a beacon of hope for a conflict-torn region, calling for “the divine gift of peace” in a meeting with the country’s Christian and Muslim religious leaders. The pope received a great welcome from Lebanon’s spiritual leaders on his first day of visit, where billboards bearing his image dotted highways around the capital, Beirut, with thousands of ordinary Lebanese braving the steady rain in the morning to line his motorcade route. The interfaith meeting in Martyr’s Square in Beirut had Lebanon’s Christian patriarchs and Sunni, Shiite, and Druze spiritual leaders…
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of daily life. The tools and opportunities offered by major AI companies have grown rapidly in recent years. Education is no exception. Authorities, teachers or scholars reveal how the students use tools such as ChatGPT to complete homework, including essays. At the same time, AI also offers valuable support for teachers. How widely are teachers using AI across Europe? Which countries are ahead? And what do teachers rely on AI for the most? According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), teachers’ use of AI significantly…
At the same time, Europe expects networks to become more resilient, more redundant, less dependent on foreign technology and more capable of supporting defense-grade applications. Security and resilience are not side tasks for telecom operators, they are baked into everything they do. From procurement and infrastructure design to daily operations, operators treat these efforts as core principles shaping how networks are built, run and protected. Therefore, as the Copenhagen Economics study shows, the level of protection Europe now requires will demand substantial additional capital. It is unrealistic to expect world-class, defense-ready infrastructure to emerge from a model that has become…
