Published on 04/12/2025 – 9:13 GMT+1 Norway has postponed controversial deep–sea mining plans, a delay environmentalists say must be “the nail in the coffin” for the industry. Yesterday (3 December) the country’s Labour government confirmed it will not issue licenses for deep-sea mining during the current legislative term, which doesn’t end until 2029. The agreement follows intense negotiations between Labour, the Socialist Left Party, the Green Party, the Red Party and the Centre Party. While Labour leads the government, it does not have a majority on its own and needed support from other political parties to get its 2026 State…

But there’s another reason for the chaotic scenes we’ve witnessed over the past few months — of summits announced then called off, deadlines declared then abandoned, plans set in stone then amended, all with an ever-rotating cast of characters leading negotiations — and that’s because the Trump administration lacks a formal process to develop policy, provide guidance, interact with foreign governments and set a clear direction. This absence of formal process is a unique feature — or bug — of this presidency. Of course, Trump is hardly the first U.S. leader to rely on a small coterie of aides to…
Ukraine and its European allies on Wednesday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of feigning interest in peace efforts after five hours of talks with US envoys at the Kremlin produced no breakthrough or compromise. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged Putin to “stop wasting the world’s time,” while the UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called on the Russian leader to “end the bluster and the bloodshed and be ready to come to the table and to support a just and lasting peace”. The remarks came as foreign ministers from European NATO countries showed little patience with Moscow in their Brussels…
By Elise Morton & AP Published on 24/11/2025 – 9:59 GMT+1 It’s not every day archaeologists get to lift the lid on a tomb that’s been sealed shut for 1,700 years – but that’s exactly what happened beneath the streets of Budapest, where researchers have uncovered a remarkably intact Roman sarcophagus. The limestone coffin was discovered during excavations in Óbuda, a northern district that was once part of Aquincum, a thriving Roman settlement along the Danube. And here’s the extraordinary bit: it had never been opened or disturbed since it was first sealed all those centuries ago. “The peculiarity of the finding is…
