Just over a week ago, pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the Vuelta cycle race to oppose the Israeli team’s participation. Several stages were disrupted, participants had to dismount before the finish line and the final ceremony was held in a hotel car park without any spectators. At the same time, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez questioned Israel’s right to participate in international competitions, citing Russia as an example of a country frozen out of such events over the war in Ukraine. He proposed a series of measures to put pressure on the Israeli government, including formalising an arms embargo, increasing humanitarian aid…

The plan for the huge settlement in what is technically termed E1, just east of Jerusalem, has been pushed for years by Israeli ultranationalists and settler leaders, including Smotrich, but had been on hold for decades because of fierce international opposition. In August, the project for 20,000 housing units got final approval, prompting Smotrich to brag, “the Palestinian state is being erased from the table not with slogans, but with actions.” Most peace plans envision the Israeli and Palestinian states being based on the borders as they existed before the Six-Day War of 1967 with some agreed land swaps to…

Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Monday accused Russia of spending “hundreds of millions of euros” to subvert her country’s parliamentary election this weekend. “The Kremlin is pouring hundreds of millions of euros to buy hundreds of thousands of votes on both banks of the Nistru river and abroad,” she said. “People are intoxicated daily with lies. Hundreds of individuals are paid to provoke disorder, violence, and spread fear. “If Russia gains control over Moldova, the consequences will be immediate and dangerous for our country and for the entire region. Every Moldovan will suffer, no matter who they voted for,” she…

The reforms went beyond emergency fixes. They set the stage for a green transformation. By amending renewables legislation, the government committed to 27 percent renewable energy in total consumption by 2030, with 30 percent in the electricity mix.         The results are visible: tenders for 165 MW of renewable capacity have been launched and contracted and a net billing mechanism was introduced, boosting the number of prosumers. In April 2025 more than a third of Moldova’s electricity already came from local renewables. The ministry has also supported the development of energy communities, biofuels and pilot projects for energy efficiency.…

Donald Trump paid tribute to Charlie Kirk at the right-wing activist’s memorial service yesterday, posthumously awarding Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom and using his speech to take aim at his political opponents.  Amid concerns that Trump and his base were politicising the death of Kirk, the US President doubled down and took the time to slam the backlash against the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live during the service in Glendale’s State Farm Stadium.   Trump said that one key difference between him and Kirk was that Kirk “did not hate his opponents”. “He wanted the best for them. That’s where I…

He added he wants to have “100 percent certainty” that Poland’s NATO allies will view any incursion in the same way, so that “if the conflict enters a very acute phase, we will not be alone.” The incidents heightened security concerns along NATO’s eastern flank, triggering calls for increased vigilance against Russian provocations. Following the incursion of 21 Russian drones into Poland earlier this month, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced the launch of the Eastern Sentry mission to bolster air defenses. Poland is also considering more effective ways of neutralizing potential Russian incursions instead of scrambling fighter jets and using very…

The coalition pledges to “unlock financing and de-risk investments, particularly in developing countries, by lowering costs, attracting capital and closing the financing gap, in close partnership with international financial institutions and development banks.” “Stark disparities in access to energy and investment remain,” the statement goes on to warn. “Much more needs to be done to ensure the transition not only advances globally but also benefits the people and economies that need it most.” The statement cites a lack of investment in power grids and electricity storage that would allow countries with abundant wind and solar potential to decarbonize. “Of the…
