Update: Merz’ Regierungserklärung vor dem EU-Gipfel – zwischen Wirtschaft und Wehrhaftigkeit – POLITICO Skip to main content
“The government needs to pick the right opponents and the right fights where we know we can win,” said Labour MP Graeme Downie. “That allows progress to be made but also shows the public the values we hold, the issues that matter the most to us and the priorities we have to improve the country.” Wading into political fights is one of the prongs to the new media approach No.10 communications boss and former tabloid editor David Dinsmore set out during a Starmer Cabinet meeting this week. Three people with knowledge of the strategy, not authorized to speak publicly, said…
With respect to the Ukraine war, the northerners deny they oppose the use of eurobonds over concerns about the solvency of other EU countries, but argue they prefer the assets because they would provide a greater long-term cash infusion to Ukraine. “This is not about frugals versus spenders. It’s about being pro-Ukraine or not,” said a second EU diplomat, adding that northern and eastern European countries have taken the lead in bankrolling Ukraine’s war needs over the past four years. Backing the Belgians Despite weeks of painstaking negotiations over the assets, efforts to bring Belgium around are backfiring. The country adamantly opposes…
Around 10,000 people gathered outside Lithuania’s parliament to protest fast-tracked changes to the law governing the public broadcaster. Demonstrators said the amendments threaten free speech and weaken the independence of Lithuanian National Radio and Television during a tense political crisis. The ruling coalition wants to lower the threshold for dismissing the LRT director general. Under the proposal, the governing board could vote by secret ballot and remove the head with fewer votes and broader grounds. Critics say the move targets the current director.
The report says Pappas followed the two journalists toward the exit and twice hit Yiannopoulos from behind, knocking him to the ground. The two journalists said they returned to the bar, and as the Greeks tried to leave they bumped into Pappas, who threatened them. An hour later Pappas sent apologies by text message and tried to reach the journalist by phone, but he did not reply. Yiannopoulos filed a complaint with local police. POLITICO reached out to Pappas, but he did not reply to a request for comment. Syriza President Socrates Famellos subsequently expelled Pappas from the party’s European…
By Euronews Published on 17/12/2025 – 20:30 GMT+1 With the new Migration and Asylum Pact not entering into force before 2026, are these latest measures a necessary response to security concerns — or a step toward a “Fortress Europe”? As irregular crossings remain deadly and far-right pressure grows across member states, the European Parliament now faces a decisive choice: double down on stricter border controls or reaffirm Europe’s commitment to human rights and international law. To debate the future of EU migration policy, we are joined by MEP Charlie Weimers, from the European Conservatives and Reformists, and MEP Li Andersson, from…
But those calls have been in vain. The secretariat general that manages the European School system “has minimized the impact of the conflict, pointing out that the holiday could be addressed in the classroom as cultural content,” according to a note circulated among parents. The secretariat general of the European Schools did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication. “These celebrations form part of our cultural and educational identity, and eliminating them sends a message of disconnection from deeply ingrained traditions with undeniable emotional value for families,” said a parent, who asked to be identified only by…
Published on 17/12/2025 – 17:41 GMT+1 •Updated 17:49 Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened on Wednesday that Moscow will seek to extend its “gains” in Ukraine if Kyiv and its Western allies reject the Kremlin’s demands. Speaking at an annual meeting with top Russian military officers, Putin rejected any possibility of the Kremlin accepting the amended US-led peace plan to put an end to its war against Ukraine. He said that Moscow “would prefer” to achieve its goals and “eliminate the root causes” by diplomatic means, but “if the opposing side and its foreign patrons refuse to engage in substantive dialogue,…
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office official familiar with the final shortlist process, and granted anonymity to speak freely, described a “massive fightback in the past days” to sway Prime Minister Keir Starmer towards a diplomat candidate and rule out Chandra. They put the shift in direction in No. 10 down to a mix of “assiduous lobbying” about both the risks of another political appointee and the importance of a pick with security and tough negotiating experience – as well as the advantages of lifting Foreign Office morale in the midst of job cuts. The key diplomatic post has been vacant since Mandelson,…
