Putin then took to the stage at the AI Journey conference, telling the audience that Russia “must possess a whole range of its own technologies and products in the field of active artificial intelligence.” “The entire spectrum of such models must be trained and fully controlled by Russian specialists, at all stages,” he added. Putin noted that creating new data centres and building new compact nuclear power sites to power them is a top priority for Russia. “In less than two decades, primarily in the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East, we plan to build 38 nuclear power units. Big reforms, small concessions The Commission’s double-decker digital omnibus package includes one plan to simplify the EU’s data-related laws (including the GDPR as well as rules for nonpersonal data), and another specifically targeting the AI Act. A Commission official, briefing reporters without being authorized to speak on the record, said the omnibus’ impact on the GDPR was subject to “intense discussion” internally in the run up to Wednesday’s presentation, after its rough reception from some parliament groups and privacy organizations. Much in the EU executive’s final text remained unchanged. Among the proposals, the Commission wants to insert an affirmation into…

ATHENS — The Chinese embassy in Athens lashed out against U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle on Wednesday over her recent criticism of Beijing’s investments in Greece. Guilfoyle’s comments were a “malicious slander” against Sino-Greek trade relations and a “serious interference in Greek internal affairs,” an embassy spokesperson said in a written statement. Last week Guilfoyle said China’s state ownership of the Port of Piraeus, Greece’s largest such facility, was “unfortunate” and suggested it could be circumvented. “Something could be worked out, whether you pursue a path of enhancing output in other areas or perhaps that Piraeus could be for sale,” she…
Germany presented its newly developed Leopard 2A8 tank in Munich on Wednesday, as the European Union unveiled a new defense spending package amid continuing tensions with Russia. According to reports from German news agency dpa, the German Armed Forces will receive the first vehicles for testing in 2026 and will conduct intensive suitability tests. The first battalions will then receive the vehicles, starting with soldiers from the Lithuanian Brigade stationed in the Baltic States to protect the eastern flank. A range of other European nations including the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Czechia have also placed orders for the tank, according…

“This is a very dangerous phase of escalation and we should address it really seriously because we are minutes from big casualties here,” said Budrys, who will present his concerns his counterparts at Thursday’s Foreign Affairs Council. “If it would be successful, these operations, this sabotage that was conducted in Poland, we would be talking in a different environment, with dead people as a consequence.” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski will give ministers an update during the session in Brussels, as an investigation gets underway into the suspected railway sabotage. Warsaw said Tuesday that military-grade C-4 explosives had been used…
