But Trump’s call to Putin was enough to fuel speculation that a breakthrough on talks might be close. “We are ready,” Zelenskyy told reporters at the White House, adding that plans for a summit would be “formalized in some way in the next week or 10 days.” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed Putin’s supposed verbal openness to talks, telling Fox News: “Just the fact that Putin is saying, ‘sure, I’ll meet with Zelenskyy’ — that’s a big deal.” Still, the top diplomat also played down expectations. “We’re not there yet, but that’s what we’re aiming towards and that’s…
By Euronews Published on 19/08/2025 – 16:24 GMT+2 A false video is circulating on social media that purportedly shows United States President Donald Trump berating the Irish government for its immigration policy. The video appears to show Trump blasting Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheál Martin and Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Simon Harris as “weak and useless leaders”, who have supposedly allowed their country to be invaded by criminals. The speech contains a rambling, xenophobic tirade against the pair and their government, with Trump even appearing to call their actions “evil”. “I will punish, humiliate and belittle you, for your sick globalist and…
Published on 19/08/2025 – 16:00 GMT+2 People in Pakistan searched remote areas for bodies swept away by flash flooding as the death toll climbed to more than 300 on Tuesday. More than 150 people are still missing in the district of Buner in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after the flooding on Friday. A changing climate has made residents of northern Pakistan’s river-carved mountainous areas more vulnerable to sudden, heavy rains. Villagers said there had been no warnings broadcast from mosque loudspeakers, a traditional method for alerting locals about emergencies in remote areas. The government said the sudden downpour was so intense that the deluge…
Putin, who has been the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant since 2023 for war crimes in Ukraine committed during the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion, would not be arrested if he came to the Alpine country to participate in a “peace conference,” Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis announced, adding Switzerland was “ready for such a meeting.” “We have always signaled our willingness, but it naturally depends on the will of the major powers,” Cassis said. Switzerland had “clarified the legal situation,” he added, and could host such a summit “despite the arrest warrant against Putin because of our special…
World Photography Day: The story behind ‘Napalm Girl’ – and its link to 2025’s horror film ‘Weapons’
Today is World Photography Day, the annual celebration raising awareness about the importance of photography. The day dates back to 1837, when Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce created the Daguerreotype, the first publicly available photographic process. It takes place on this day to commemorates the declaration of patent for the invention by the French government. Last year, the Euronews Culture team handpicked their favourite photos. This year, we focus on one specific shot, which not only feels as depressingly relevant today as it was the day it was taken, but also inspired a filmmaker whose film is one of…
Owens helmed an eight-part podcast series called “Becoming Brigitte,” in which she pushes various conspiracy theories about the Macrons and their relationship, all of which the Macrons have vociferously denied. “[Owens] is someone who knew very well that she was spreading false information and did so with the aim of causing harm, in the service of an ideology and with established connections to far-right leaders,” Macron said in the interview. Macron explained that the couple had been advised not to press charges when these allegations first emerged in France to avoid the so-called Streisand effect — drawing more attention to…
A ship loaded with 1,200 tonnes of food for Gaza approached the Israeli port of Ashdod on Tuesday in a renewed effort to alleviate the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip as famine threatens the territory. The Panamanian-flagged vessel was screened by Israeli officials at the Cypriot port of Limassol before departing. It’s carrying food aid such as pasta, rice, baby food and canned goods. Around 700 tonnes of the aid is from Cyprus, purchased with money donated by the United Arab Emirates to the so-called Amalthea Fund, set up last year for donors to help with seaborne aid. The…
Access to effective and affordable contraception remains highly unequal across Europe — but most countries are heading in the right direction. The latest Contraception Policy Atlas by the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF) shows that 22 out of 47 countries now include contraceptives in their national health systems. Counselling services are also covered in all of them except Austria. The report also notes that nearly a quarter of European countries provide high-quality, government-run websites offering clear information about contraception. In 17% of countries, emergency contraception is available free of charge at pharmacies or public health centres.…
In a series of interviews with French and American media, Macron praised Trump’s decision to, in the U.S. president’s words, provide Ukraine with a “very good security guarantee.” “The big change in recent days is that he has acknowledged the need to guarantee Ukraine’s security,” Macron told Paris Match. What that security guarantee entails is not yet clear, though Macron told LCI that “the British, French, Germans, Turks and others are ready to carry out operations, not at the frontline, not provocatively, but reassurance operations in the air, at sea and on land.” Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer…
The company then filed a complaint with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal challenging the Home Secretary’s powers to issue such a notice. The dispute has been a sticking point in negotiations for a tech cooperation pact between London and Washington. The Financial Times reported last month that senior Washington officials, including Vice President JD Vance, were pressuring the U.K. to drop its fight with Apple. The U.S. State Department’s annual assessment of countries’ human rights records published last month raised concerns about U.K. “government regulation to reduce or eliminate effective encryption (and therefore user privacy) on platforms,” though appeared to confuse…
