Consumer protection groups, the European airline industry and EU member states have failed to agree on proposed new protections for air passengers, leaving regulations still stuck in legislative limbo after more than a decade. Dissatisfaction with the draft text has now reached such a level that the industry has called for a pause in the negotiations. “We urgently call for a 6-month pause to the deliberations until a thorough impact assessment of the proposed measures has been conducted,” reads a letter sent on Tuesday to the bloc’s transport ministers on behalf of the airline industry operating in Europe. The Council…
By Euronews Published on 27/11/2025 – 13:39 GMT+1 France will launch a voluntary military service programme in summer 2026, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday during a speech in Varces in the Alps. The scheme will recruit 18 and 19-year-olds selected during a “day of mobilisation” based on their motivation and the needs of the armed forces. Volunteers will serve for ten months, beginning with one month of initial training in basic military skills and weapons handling, followed by nine months in a military unit deployed only on French territory. Participants will receive pay and take part in all missions, including…
Global headwinds While the U.K.-EU reset deal and India deal are not included in the OBR’s current forecast, it does offers some hope for the future. “The result of the UK-EU strategic partnership and the Youth Mobility Scheme are still being negotiated and therefore there is not sufficient detail to assess their potential fiscal and economic impacts,” it said. “We will consider whether any such impacts should be included in the forecast once the full details of the agreements have been finalised, published and agreed by both the EU and UK. This is the standard approach we have taken to…
Published on 27/11/2025 – 12:50 GMT+1 Ukraine’s former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said that reducing the size of Ukraine’s armed forces as part of a peace deal with Russia would be “humiliation” for Kyiv and leave the country vulnerable to future aggression. “If you establish a cap on the army (…) it’s a clear message that a foreign power humiliates your army, your nation,” Kuleba told Euronews’ interview programme “12 minutes with”. “We will pave the road to hell with good intentions of satisfying the Russians. And capping the army is the most prominent example of that effort.” Diplomatic…

Donald Trump is once again lashing out at female journalists, following his viral outburst during which he called Bloomberg’s White House correspondent Catherine Lucey “piggy”. Yesterday, Trump targeted a New York Times reporter in a Truth Social post, calling Katie Rogers “ugly inside and out.” The data-driven report by The New York Times analysed Trump’s schedules this year, comparing them to his first term in office. The article found that Trump “keeps a shorter public schedule than he used to,” and “when he is in public, occasionally, his battery shows signs of wear.” Trump criticized the newspaper for the article…
The judo decision comes amid hints from senior figures in international sport that relations should be normalized with Russian athletes, who have been banned from many events and competitions since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. “Sport must remain a beacon of hope — a place where people can come together in peaceful competition. This is the essence of Olympism: Every eligible athlete, team and official must be able to take part without discrimination or political interference,” Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee, said during an event in Brussels last week. Judo, which is one…

Published on 27/11/2025 – 9:40 GMT+1 The Venezuelan government on Wednesday implemented sanctions against six international airlines that had suspended their operations to Caracas. The measure came into effect after a 48-hour deadline that President Nicolás Maduro’s government gave the companies to resume their flights expired. The companies affected are Iberia, TAP, Turkish Airlines, Avianca, Latam Colombia, and Gol. All had cancelled their routes after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning last Friday asking commercial airlines to exercise extreme caution when flying over Venezuela and the southern Caribbean. Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello commented very concisely and…
The findings conclude three separate investigations launched by the Ombudsman, following complaints from civil society that the Commission was bypassing its own “Better Regulation” rules, which outline what steps the EU needs to take when drafting legislative proposals. “The Commission must be able to respond urgently to different situations, particularly in the current geopolitical context,” European Ombudswoman Teresa Anjinho said in a statement. “However, it needs to ensure that accountability and transparency continue to be part of its legislative processes and that its actions are clearly explained to citizens.” The Commission did not provide enough evidence to “justify the ‘urgency’…
