A spokesperson for Veldkamp confirmed that the minister will also personally summon the Israeli ambassador on Tuesday. “Later today our minister will also decide whether he wants to support the suspension of the trade provisions of the EU-Israel association agreement,” the spokesperson added. The decision follows an emergency meeting in The Hague on Monday, where Prime Minister Dick Schoof, the three Deputy Prime Ministers Sophie Hermans, Mona Keijzer and Eddy van Hijum, as well as Veldkamp and Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans gathered, interrupting the summer recess, to agree on the measures amid growing domestic and international pressure. As part of the meeting’s…

Famine is now unfolding in Gaza, the leading global authority on food crises said on Tuesday, predicting “widespread death” without immediate action. “The worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,” said the alert by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). “Mounting evidence shows that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths. Failure to act now will result in widespread death in much of the Strip.” The IPC alert falls short of a formal famine declaration, and the monitor said it would conduct further analysis “without delay”. It follows…

Speaking to Sky News on Tuesday, Kyle said: “We have people out there who are extreme pornographers, peddling hate, peddling violence. Nigel Farage is on their side. “Make no mistake about it, if people like Jimmy Savile were alive today, he’ll be perpetrating his crimes online. And Nigel Farage is saying that he’s on their side. “Nigel Farage is on the side of turning the clock back to the time when strange adults, strangers can get in touch via messaging apps with children. “Absolutely, no doubt about it, people are perpetrating more crime online, more danger to children online. And…

Jamie Dettmer is opinion editor and a foreign affairs columnist at POLITICO Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took fright last week — as well he might. Within a day of signing a law that stripped two key anti-corruption agencies — the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) — of their independence, he climbed down in the face of mass protests. The demonstrations were the first to be mounted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country in 2022. Initially, it appeared the Ukrainian leader was set to brazen it out, determined to shrug off…

His position, however, is coming under increasing strain with the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has upped the ante on the international stage by promising recognition in September. At home, an increasing number of Starmer’s Cabinet ministers have urged him to rethink his position, while 221 MPs from across the spectrum signed a letter to the same effect last week. Yet the PM is in no rush to do so, instead announcing that he is working on his own “pathway to peace,” which he likened to the “coalition of the willing” he convened in support…

Nor would taking Russian energy out of the equation make much difference: The bloc spent just €23 billion on oil, gas and nuclear imports from Moscow last year. At the same time, the U.S. only sent $166 billion in oil and gas abroad last year, Page explained, meaning it would have to divert all its exports to the EU — and then some. That’s “just never going to happen,” she said, especially as U.S. LNG exports are not tied to a single destination and usually go to the highest bidder worldwide.  That’s not the only technical difficulty. The EU currently…
