Published on 02/12/2025 – 11:47 GMT+1 Shares in Bayer rose over 9% during Tuesday morning trading in Frankfurt after a show of support from the US government. Amid years of legal battles regarding product safety, the Trump administration urged the US Supreme Court to review a Bayer appeal concerning its Roundup weedkiller. The German firm is currently trying to quash around 67,000 lawsuits in the US based on the claim that the weedkiller causes cancer — a claim Bayer denies. The product contains glyphosate, an ingredient deemed “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. US…
“It is our national duty to protect the German culture from foreign influence,” he said, rolling his “R” and speaking in a cadence reminiscent of Hitler. Chrupalla told a TV show on Monday night: “He has already received the party expulsion notice and will leave the party. We don’t want people like [him] in our party.” He labeled the speech “bad satire” and said Eichwald only joined the AfD two months ago. After Eichwald’s speech, AfD members questioned whether his contribution was meant seriously. One member asked him whether he was an informant for Germany’s domestic intelligence service. Eichwald replied: “This…
But Tusk, under pressure from the opposition nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, took a harder line on the matter than he has in the past, criticizing Germany’s logic for refusing to pay war reparations to Poland. “We in Poland all believe that Poland has not received compensation for the losses and crimes of World War II,” Tusk said. After his reelection in 2023, Tusk had not highlighted the reparations demands of the previous PiS government, which called on Germany to pay €1.3 trillion for its 1939-1945 occupation of Poland. Berlin has repeatedly said the matter is legally “closed.” But…
Israel will deploy its Iron Beam laser defence system by the end of the year, following the high-power system’s completion of operational testing in September, becoming the first country to field a combat-ready laser air defence system. The 100-kilowatt system successfully intercepted missiles, mortar shells, unmanned aerial vehicles and other aircraft during weeks of trials, demonstrating its ability to destroy targets with precision within seconds, the Israeli Defence Ministry stated. Iron Beam will provide Israel with a fifth layer of air defence, supplementing the Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow 2 and 3 systems. While existing systems achieve interception rates…

It’s almost a decade since the referendum on leaving the EU – and it feels like Sir Keir Starmer has turned up the dial on his Brexit rhetoric. He said it would be “reckless” to use Brexit as a template for foreign policy. Sam and Anne discuss what the PM had to say. Elsewhere, how good is the UK-US zero-tariff drugs deal really, and how are voters feeling about Labour as the budget dust starts to settle? Anne has some intel on the race to replace Lord Mandelson as the UK’s Ambassador to the United States. Plus, a listener asks…
A peaceful rally in Sofia turned violent as tens of thousands of Bulgarians protested the government’s 2026 draft budget. Initially calm, the demonstration saw young crowds chanting “Resignation” and demanding revisions. Tensions rose when small groups moved toward ruling party headquarters and threw chairs at buildings and police. Footage showed clashes, burning garbage containers and vandalized police vehicles. Days earlier, the government withdrew the draft budget after similar protests and pledged renewed dialogue with employers and unions.
Illegal wildlife trading is one of the world’s most profitable environmental crimes. International specialists at the 20th CITES Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, estimated that this kind of crime generates from €6.6 billion to €21.9 billion annually and impacts thousands of species. International conservation assessments show that over 40,000 species are currently threatened with extinction. Many of these species are targeted due to illegal commercial demand. Increasing threats, including illegal trade, habitat destruction, and environmental degradation, demand stronger protection measures. As a result, countries and institutions are turning to modern technologies such as AI, digital monitoring, and DNA-based identification to keep…
It’s been one year since Ursula von der Leyen began her second term as European Commission president, and Europe’s sustainability agenda has been turned on its head. A backlash against environmental regulation is in full swing, with political groups from the center to the far right intent on watering down laws that were often only recently agreed. Internationally, Donald Trump’s return to the White House is pressuring Brussels to loosen its own green rulebook, while China is outpacing Europe in the global clean-tech race. The result: rising uncertainty for European industry. Against this backdrop, POLITICO’s Sustainable Future Summit takes on…
